==Life and career==
Born Gail Ziegler on October 11, 1937 to Jewish parents in Park Ridge, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. The daughter of Elsie Mary (née Reif), a writer of several prize-winning children's novels, and Norman Arthur Ziegler, an engineer and businessman. Brown graduated from Maine Township High School East in 1955.
She played the role Clarice Hobson on the soap opera Another World from 1975 to 1986 with sporadic on-off appearances following her departure. In his book ''Eight Years in Another World,'' head writer Harding Lemay stated that he intended the character of Clarice to last only two days, but he was so taken by Brown's performance that he decided to add the character to the storyline.
